Essential Duties
The Department of History, Political Science, and Geography at Mississippi University for Women (MUW) invites applications for an Assistant Professor appointment in women’s history, beginning August 2024.
The search is open with regard to temporal and geographic focus, but we especially welcome applications from women’s history scholars with expertise in Southern US or public history and to those who have experience teaching undergraduates and supporting undergraduate research in local and regional archives.
The position requires teaching a 4-4 mix of introductory survey classes and specialized upper-level undergraduate courses, periodically including a sophomore methods course and senior research course taught on rotation by the history faculty.
Upper-level courses will be related to the needs of the program and the selected candidate’s field of expertise and preferences.
The successful candidate will demonstrate the qualifications and enthusiasm to teach a broad range of undergraduate history courses in a department with majors in History, Political Science, and Interdisciplinary Studies; concentrations in Nonprofit Advocacy, Public History, Social Studies, and Teacher Certification; and minors including Geography, Pre-Law, and Medieval Studies.
In addition the department maintains academic and professional relationships with the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program, the Center for Women’s Research and Public Policy, and the Ina E.
Gordy Honors College, and we seek a colleague who will continue our tradition of excellence in women’s scholarship by contributing cross-listed coursework, mentoring undergraduate research, and contributing to public history projects in women’s history.

Minimum Qualifications • PhD in History, Women’s Studies, or a related interdisciplinary field, or hold ABD status with expectations of degree completion prior to August 2024 • a minimum of 18 hours of graduate coursework in history • demonstrated experience and expertise in Women’s History • enthusiasm for mentoring and advising a diverse population of students from under-served communities Job Description Summary Full-time tenure track position requires teaching a 4-4 mix of introductory survey classes and specialized upper-level undergraduate courses, periodically including a sophomore methods course and senior research course taught on rotation by the history faculty.
