Job Summary: Under general supervision, the Student Life Specialist I is responsible for the administration of one or more Student Life program(s).
Serves as liaison between the program and other departments or the community.
Position may supervise staff or students.
Part of the Student Life Career Progression Plan.
Additional Department Summary: The Fraternity & Sorority Student Safety & Wellbeing Coordinator develops, implements, and evaluates educational, health, safety, and wellness initiatives for the fraternity and sorority community at The University of Alabama.
The fraternity and sorority community at UA consists of 69 social fraternities and sororities with almost 12,000 student members, including 50 chapter housing facilities with approximately 1,900 residents.
Leads member harm reduction and wellness initiatives in the fraternity and sorority community.
Advocates for policies and practices that address community wellbeing.
Supports student success.
Provides individual student services aimed at the fraternity and sorority community.
Reports to the Assistant Director.
Completes required training and promotes a safe, hospitable, and respectful workplace.
Follows internal processes and controls as outlined in University policies and procedures.
Has personal accountability for financial reporting.
Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or higher and some experience in programming related to harm and risk reduction and/or health and wellness in a higher education setting.
Skills and Knowledge: Ability to conduct presentations and training workshops.
Effective verbal and written communication skills applicable for a diverse population.
Strong organizational skills.
Ability to use word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs.
Knowledge of NASPA/ACPA Professional Competency Areas for Student Affairs Educators.
Ability to handle sensitive and privileged information.
Ability to maintain knowledge of regulations regarding student privacy and information sharing.
Knowledge of assessment tools.
Ability to collaborate with stakeholders on campus and in community.
Demonstrated commitment to expanding multicultural knowledge, awareness, and skills as evidenced through demonstrating self-awareness; understanding and valuing others; demonstrating knowledge of social inequalities; interacting effectively with a diversity of people; fostering equity and inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in risk management or a health-related field and two (2) years of experience in student programming and development, risk management, health promotion and wellness, health science, or related field; OR Master's degree in Public Health, Health Promotion, Health Policy, Health Education, Student Affairs, College Student Personnel, Higher Education or related field and one (1) year of professional leadership experience in a higher education setting.
Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) or Certified in Public Health (CPH); Certified Wellness Coach (or eligible and intent to become certified).
Affiliation with an Inter/National Greek-letter organization is preferred, but not required.
